Some would say their love story is an excellent Hallmark Channel movie. Some would say their love defied impossible odds. Others have said they should write a book about their incredible and unconventional love story. Well, here is the fable of their love story (Well...The Reader's Digest version, of course. No one has time to write that book right now!)
Sharon and Kurt met when they were only four years old while playing together in their mothers’ elementary school classrooms during a PTA meeting. Even at such a young age, Kurt was instantly attracted to Sharon. She had a smile that melted hearts and a flair for fashion. He still remembers her wearing the cutest HEE HAW overalls. They looked forward to attending PTA meetings and other school functions until Sharon’s mother started teaching third grade at a different elementary school.
Fast-forward to the first day of 8th grade and high school. Kurt walked into homeroom and saw Sharon seated in class. He immediately sat next to her, and it was like their friendship had never skipped a beat.
Their teenage friendship continued to grow that year. Now Kurt will tell you about the infamous “Will you go with me” letter he had ready to give Sharon during a basketball game they attended that fall. During one of the games that night, an upperclassman, who happened to be the star basketball player, came over to talk to Sharon. Kurt decided that was NOT something he was interfering with, so he put the letter back in his pocket and did not give it to Sharon. Don't worry! Kurt was able to make the magic of the moment happen again. Sharon received a similar letter when Kurt asked her to marry him. She, of course, said yes! Kurt and Sharon remained the best of friends during high school. Sharon’s parents were pretty strict with Sharon, but they loved Kurt. She could not go out with boys until 16, but Kurt could always pick Sharon up or come over to the house.
Kurt and Sharon remained best friends during their high school years but never dated. After high school, life continued, and Kurt and Sharon slowly drifted apart. They would occasionally see each other or keep in touch through their parents.
About 11 years ago, Kurt was in the process of opening a clothing cleaners. Kurt reached out to Sharon through his business’s Facebook account. The two picked up their friendship like time and space had been nonexistent. Kurt and Sharon reconnected as friends, but that changed on one fateful night. Kurt met with Sharon and two friends for dinner and drinks. One of the friends had never seen Kurt and Sharon interact. Kurt and Sharon would say their interaction was purely platonic. The friend saw otherwise. She saw organic chemistry. The friend soon started asking questions that would open Pandora’s box and triggered the start of their relationship. She asked questions like, “Have you all dated?” The answer was no. Why have you not dated, and have you both ever wanted to date each other? They both acknowledged a mutual attraction and explained that they had always wanted to date each other and provided the same explanation as to why they never dated. Both stated that they never wanted to ruin their friendship!! However, by the end of diner they collectively realized that a spark had been ignited and it could never be extinguished and their friendship would only grow stronger. After dinner, Kurt and Sharon started to explore their feelings and eventually began to pursue a relationship.
The relationship you witness today is built on a friendship that has lasted 47 years. It is built on God, love, trust, sacrifice, commitment, caring admiration, and respect. No matter the highs or the lows, their friendship and love have weathered the test of time. Kurt and Sharon hope you enjoyed their story and will celebrate and support their impending union.
